We’re thrilled to welcome Johannes Yrjö, a Helsinki-based hairdresser and content creator, as the latest feature in our Friends of KOTA series. With his keen eye for form and a deep love of expression, Johannes blends design and self-care in everything he touches — from hair to home.

Design Beyond the Salon

For Johannes, hair isn’t just a profession — it’s a form of design. “It’s about shape, texture, and expression,” he says. “Just like interior spaces.” Whether he’s styling clients or decorating his home, his approach is intentional, heartfelt, and deeply rooted in creativity. “Design is part of everything I do,” Johannes explains. “From how I set up my salon to how I arrange my space at home — it’s not just about visuals. It’s about feeling.”

His philosophy is refreshingly holistic: design isn’t simply something you see, but something you live and breathe. Without it, Johannes says, “life would feel flat and uninspiring.”

A Home That Reflects the Soul

Tucked away in a peaceful corner of Helsinki, Johannes’ apartment is a warm retreat from the city’s energy — shared with his two charming dogs, Alpo and Åke. The space mirrors his personality with soft minimalism, clean lines, and natural textures. Think earthy tones, cozy layers, and a sense of ease that invites you to exhale.

“My home is where I recharge,” Johannes shares. “It holds my energy, calms my thoughts, and reflects who I am without needing to say a word. I think of it as a mirror to my inner world.”

The KOTA Touch

When it came to furnishing his space, Johannes gravitated toward pieces that are not only functional but also meaningful. “KOTA couches really stood out to me,” he says. “They felt honest and grounded — beautifully functional objects with a calm, sculptural quality. It was an easy yes for my space.”

Now, with a KOTA sofa bed anchoring his living room, Johannes is planning relaxed movie nights and spontaneous slumber parties with friends. It’s the perfect blend of cozy and cool — just like him.
